My grandmother isn’t just the mom of my mom, she is way more than that. She is my inspiration, my strength, my mentor, my best friend. She is the person I call first when something good happens or something bad happens. She has always been there for me and she has always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself.
My grandma isn’t about big words of love. I can probably count on my hands the number of times she said she loves me, but I just know how much she loves me through everything we have been through. I try to surprise my grandma with monthly treats – she loves beauty products (I think it comes from lack of them in the USSR, where I am from), so I send her a monthly set of them. That also was her Birthday gift! She also loves flowers, so I send them to her without any reason, just because I love her.
My grandma is a fashionista. I heavily relied on her advice growing up on what to wear or how to pair things. She would take me shopping when I was 2-years-old and always allowed me to have my own style (even when she probably shouldn’t have). Now I take her to fashion shows and value her opinion on what she likes and dislikes!
When my grandma is happy, I am happy, and the feeling you get from seeing someone you love so happy is the most precious feeling in the world!
This year Valentine’s Day is marking a really special time in my relationship – my three year anniversary! I met my boyfriend Derek the week before school started our Freshmen year of college at UCLA. I don’t want to get too sappy, but I knew from the moment I met him that we were going to end up together.
Now it’s been three and a half years since we met, and it’s absolutely crazy to see how much both our lives have changed. I remember back when he won me over singing outside my dorm, and I can’t believe that soon he will be singing on Broadway! We have grown a lot in the past few years, and now he has definitely become part of who I am. Since we both moved to New York, we have had some amazing adventures and I know there are still many more to come!
The thing I treasure the most about Derek is his ability to keep me laughing. Not one day goes by that he doesn’t entertain me to the point of tears, and I have become so much more light-hearted with him in my life. He teaches me to live in the present, not to take life too seriously, to work hard and let good things follow.
He is constantly keeping me on my toes and is my best friend. Hey, it’s not everyday that you find a boy who looks forward to a glass of wine and watching "The Bachelor" as much as you do!
It is wonderful beyond words to have someone that is always on my side and supporting me. I am so proud of the person he is, and I have never been happier or felt more loved than I am with him. He is the very best, and I am so thankful I found him three years ago!
It’s cheesy, yes, it’s sappy, yes… but it’s all true! Happy three year anniversary Der, I love you!
They say good friends are hard to find, which is why you need to keep the ones you discover as long as you can. For me, a good friend represents the epitome of giggles in the corners of bars, watching Lifetime on Sundays with a glass of wine, kayacking downstream only to find yourselves unable to paddle back up against the current, and food - lots and lots of food.
And no one better represents that than Lindley, a hometown friend who if i had to say so myself, is following in my geographic footsteps: from Southeast Texas to Texas A&M to Austin, and soon, to New York City. And while the two of us have been through years of finding ourselves together, we've found that there is nothing like a good couch talk to set you on the right track, or recorrect the one you are currently on. Whether we grab some whiskey (we're from Texas!) to talk over broken hearts or some wine to discuss our life goals, honesty is the one thing that binds more than anything else. That, and perhaps a bit of friendly laziness.
So, this Valentine's Day, my Valentine is the girl who brings me back to reality when I need it and who lets me stay in my fantasy world when she sees that it is most convenient, a friend of nearly 10 years (holy smokes!), Lynette girl, get yourself up to NYC! And bring a couch with you!
