Downton Abbey has recreated every girl’s dream to live in a mansion, wear gorgeous gowns encrusted with beads and pearls, and be surrounded by handsome men with English accents. It sounds an awful lot like being a princess, right?
Truth is, the Masterpiece Classic is taking America (all right UK, you beat us to this one) by storm and is transporting thousands of women every week to its magical world of 1920’s old school glamour and sophistication.
But, if you look a little closer, you will also find the messages of women rights and equality being intermixed with the drama and betrayals that take place in the Crawley household. In particular, we love the three Crawley sisters — Mary, the eldest and most poised, Edith, the awkward middle child who just doesn’t quite seem to fit, and Sybil, the beloved youngest daughter with a passion for politics and social equality.
Mary, Edith and Sybil are in some ways as different as could possibly be, but then there is one thing they all have in common: their strong will. In an age in which women were just beginning to obtain the right to vote, three smart, courageous, rebellious aristocratic women could create quite a stir. Here at Shoptiques we value women’s ability to stand out and “be yourself, be different,” and the Crawley sisters do just that.
So, join us in our effort to snatch a little bit of that Crawley sophistication, glamour and ultimately, their bravery.
