Tell us a little about yourself — how did you get to where you are today?
Wow, this is tough. I have been blogging almost seven years. On March 13 to be exact. It's been an up and down roller coaster. I started a blog because a former magazine beauty editor made the suggestion given that I travel to Paris every year to buy my skin care. It's true. I buy so many beauty products in Paris that I have started beauty tours to take women beauty shopping in different destinations. My first beauty tour was October 2012 in Paris and I will be leading another in October 2013. The information will be on the blog in the next few months.
What do you love most about what you do?
I get to inform women on the latest beauty products, where to shop and eat when traveling, and how to live an inspired life through beauty.
How do you describe your style?
"Basically fabulous" according to my friend and stylist Monica Barnett. I am not into anything that needs to be ironed. I love a pretty frock, but the days of being uncomfortable for fashion are over for me. I love resort wear because I make regular trips to the beach.
Who are your style icons?
Aerin Lauder, Tracy Reese, Tory Burch. Classy, elegant and always with a little edge.
From where do you draw inspiration for your style?
Traveling is a huge inspiration on my style. I need to be able to go from a plane to a restaurant and only add accessories. I'm really obsessed with that effortlessly chic Parisian style. I love art, design, magazines and books.
Do you have a favorite pieces of clothing?
Lululemon Wunder Under leggings, my brown zebra Manolo Blahniks, and J. Crew cashmere sweaters.
Where do you like to shop?
J. Crew and Target for basics, Lululemon for workout, and Neiman's when I want to dazzle.
The Shoptiques motto is Be Yourself, Be Different. What’s one thing that truly makes you unique?
I have always seen the glass as half full. I am by nature a positive person. I get that from my mom.
What challenges have you faced so far in your business and how have you overcome them?
I have learned not to compare myself to other bloggers and to always trust myself. My intention never steers me wrong. I have a great support system and my husband really is my biggest cheerleader. I think some of the challenges have been being an African-American woman discussing luxury beauty items and travel.
I've had crazy comments about this. It's something we don't see outside the scope of a magazine with celebrities. I love high-end skincare, fragrances and luxury hotels. I also enjoy a great Walgreens beauty haul as well.
What advice would you give to someone who has a dream or talent they want to pursue?
Nothing beats a failure, but a try.
What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they’d be surprised to find out?
My favorite genre of music is country music. I can honky tonk with the best of them.
Ten years from now, where would you like to be?
I would like to be working on a second book, still blogging and living half the year in Paris.
