What inspired you to open your boutique?
New York is one of the world’s fashion capitals, but making style simple and affordable can be overwhelming for a New York woman. Our designers are inspired by Asian, South American and European influences in travel, prints and colors—an aesthetic not common in the city. So, Callalilai was born! The store and the collections offer colorful prints in easy cuts, allowing a range of women to wear our dresses and feel original, pretty and confident in their transition from day to night. One dress can be worn several different ways, suiting each customer’s sense of style and comfort. We hope our customers will always find Callalilai as their fashion home while continuing to live, work and grow in the city.
How long have you been operating?
Callalilai’s first boutique opened in Cobble Hill in 2008. We now have three locations, including Union Square and Nolita.
How did you get the name Callalilai?
We love Calla Lily flowers and wanted to twist the name a bit. We just played with the wording and love the way it sounds.
What are your goals as a boutique owner?
We want to reach out and inspire every woman. Our customers range from the young fashionistas to the more sophisticated working girl to my mother! We try to carry brands that are affordable without sacrificing the originality of the prints, styles and quality of the fabrics. We have three locations in really different neighborhoods of New York and hope to expand into other cities, while still keeping the feel of a small boutique.
Describe your collection in 3 words.
Versatile, effortless, chic.
How would you describe the Callalilai customer?
Our typical customer is as versatile as our collection. She’s a Manhattanite or Brooklynite balancing work or family with an eye for unique simplicity, or she’s a fashionista who simply wants to look and feel amazing.
