Meet Courtney!
Tell us a little about yourself — how did you get to where you are today?
I’m the life and style blogger behind girlavantgarde.com. I started my blog in June 2012. It’s not only the perfect way to track my life, as a 20-something women living in the chaos of NYC, but also a place to channel all my creative energy. I blog about all my interests from shopping to beauty and baking.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love blogging because it has introduced me to so many new brands and opportunities. It’s totally changed my life.
How do you describe your style?
Girly with an edge. I wear dresses and heels more days of the week than anyone I know. But I also love to add unique and unexpected pieces to the mix.
Who are your style icons?
Audrey Hepburn & Olivia Palermo
From where do you draw inspiration for your style?
From other bloggers. I wake up extra early to visit so many fashion and style blogs every day.
Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
It changes all the time. I’m currently in love with my Fidelity black skinny jeans. They’re so comfortable.
Where do you like to shop?
Nordstrom, Zara & J.crew,. As for boutiques in NYC, I adore Callalilai.
The Shoptiques motto is Be Yourself, Be Different. What’s one thing that truly makes you unique?
By day, I am a law student in NYC. It takes a lot of determination to maintain a blog and study full time, but I love what I do!
What challenges have you faced so far in your business and how have you overcome them?
Sometimes I feel like there is not enough time in the day and it’s a bit overwhelming. When that happens, I take a break, rethink what my goals are, and plan ahead. I also have a wonderfully supportive family, boyfriend and friends.
What advice would you give to someone who has a dream or talent they want to pursue?
Go for it! You never know where it can take you. I decided I wanted to start a blog in January 2012 and gave myself until June to think about it and really narrow down what it was I wanted to focus on. I started it exactly six months later, and it’s been the best roller coaster ever since.
Do you think fashion empowers women, and if so, how?
Absolutely. Fashion allows women to feel beautiful, exude their inner confidence, and express themselves.

60 Second Spotlight
What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they’d be surprised to find out?
I want to live in Paris one day. It’s such a beautiful city full of culture. I love exploring the art, shopping in boutiques on the cobble stoned streets, and eating croissants in outdoor cafes.
Ten years from now, where would you like to be?
Still balancing blogging and law, but also I hope to have started a family full of healthy (and fashionable) little babies and a few puppies.
What’s the one item that's always in your bag?
My iPhone. Social media is very intertwined with my blog so I’m constantly logged in.
Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Both. I’m a chocoholic.
Favorite day of the week?
Saturday
Favorite color?
Pink
Plaid, polka dots or floral prints?
Floral prints
Are you a handbag girl or shoe girl?
Shoes! It’s a bit of a problem. My closets are overflowing with them.
If you could meet one person, who would it be?
Kate Middleton.
What did you want to be when you grew up (and because we never grow up, what do you want to be when you grow up?)
When I was little, I always wanted to be an actress. Now I want to be a lawyer & style blogger!
In an alternate life, what would you do?
I’d be Carrie Bradshaw. Isn’t she so glamorous?
Who are the most important people in your life right now?
My family and my boyfriend. They support me and give me the confidence I need to keep going.
