Tell us a little about yourself — how did you get to where you are today?
I'm a NYC girl born and raised. After getting a degree in Marketing, I spent 10 years in finance. During that time I studied Image Consulting at the Fashion Institute and started my blog The Style and Beauty Doctor in 2007. I was juggling makeup and image clients, my full time job and writing my blog until late 2010 when I decided to pursue the blog full time. It's taken me to Montréal, Warsaw, Medellin, New Orleans, Malibu and on television dishing advice on fashion and beauty.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I'm able to interact and help so many people with their personal style. I also love that I get to travel often.
How do you describe your style?
It changes, but I do grab a lot of inspiration from street style. I like to mix and match, I shop at the men's department sometimes, and I like sneakers just as much as I like stilettos.
Who are your style icons?
June Ambrose, Gwen Stefani, Solange Knowles and Kanye West when he isn't ranting about something crazy.
From where do you draw inspiration for your style?
I love looking at street style images. The people street style photographers photo always have some really quirky or fresh way of dressing that really appeals to me. I also steal from the guys and mix with more feminine pieces.
Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
Too many to pick just one but I do find myself always buying jeans, blazers and shoes!
Where do you like to shop?
Everywhere! I mostly like shopping online even though I live in such a great shopping city. Sometimes crowds make it tough to really bounce around like I like to do. If I had the time I'd try to get to the stores when they first open so I could have the place pretty much to myself, but deadlines don't allow such occurrences.
The Shoptiques motto is Be Yourself, Be Different. What’s one thing that truly makes you unique?
I'm hilarious. Like stand-up comedy hilarious. Just don't ask me to say anything funny on the spot --- or I'll clam up! I don't take myself too seriously and am probably the most overgrown child in many aspects --- except when it comes to getting work done. Then I'm an adult.
What challenges have you faced so far in your business and how have you overcome them?
It's always hard to try and get everything you dream of done. I'm a one-woman show and I always come up with the greatest ideas but since there are only 24 hours in a day and I have to sleep during about 8 of them, sometimes things get put on the back burner.
What advice would you give to someone who has a dream or talent they want to pursue?
Just get out there and do it. Surround yourself with like-minded people. The hardest thing is to have this creative dream and have naysayers barking down your neck.
Do you think fashion empowers women, and if so, how?
Yes! I know I personally turn into a different "character" based on what I have on. And when I feel like everything's working for me, there's certainly much more pep in my step.
60 Second Spotlight
What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they’d be surprised to find out?
I'm a huge fan of Twilight movies...except for the last one. The last one kind of sucked.
Ten years from now, where would you like to be?
I'd like to see The Style and Beauty Doctor involve into an even bigger fashion and beauty resource much like the HuffPo. I'll be like the Wendy Williams of fashion with my own TV show where I get to talk about fashion and makeup for an hour with really fun and interesting people in the industry.
What’s the one item that's always in your bag?
Lipstick! OK, and blot powder.I'm quite the oily girl.
Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Favorite day of the week?
Right now...it's ALL ABOUT MINT.
Plaid, polka dots or floral prints?
All three. In the same outfit.
Are you a handbag girl or shoe girl?
Totally a shoe girl.
If you could meet one person, who would it be?
Nicki Minaj. I was going to say Beyoncé but I feel like Nicki would give me everything I needed with her larger than life persona.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I think I wanted to be a teacher which is funny because I am sort of a teacher if you think about the content on my site.
In an alternate life, what would you do?
The same exact thing I'm doing now except maybe I'd have bright pink hair and be 20 lbs slimmer.
Who are the most important people in your life right now?
