Tell us a little about yourself — how did you get to where you are today?
I worked at clothing boutiques throughout high school and interned at interior design firms throughout college. After graduating with a degree in design, I moved to New York from Scottsdale, Arizona. I worked in fashion PR for a year and a half and recently started a social media consulting company. Besides consulting for various companies, I write my blog (With Love From Kat) and write for websites like Glitter Guide and Made By Girl.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I’m able to be creative every single day. I also love that every day is different.
How do you describe your style?
My style is classic with bohemian and downtown elements.
Who are your style icons?
Olivia Palermo, Jackie O, Rachel Zoe.
From where do you draw inspiration for your style?
Magazines, websites, blogs, and street style photos I see on Pinterest.
Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
Yes – my vintage Missoni dress I scored at a consignment store.
Where do you like to shop?
I love vintage and consignment stores as well as major department stores for classic staples like jeans and blouses. I go to vintage stores for those special pieces like Pucci scarves, funky sunglasses, statement jewelry….
The Shoptiques motto is Be Yourself, Be Different. What’s one thing that truly makes you unique?
I think my fashion and interior design background makes me unique. Most social media consultants strictly advise either fashion or décor companies – not both. I love being able to work with both.
What challenges have you faced so far in your business and how have you overcome them?
Learning to say no is hard. I’ve had to turn down potential clients and jobs because I knew I wouldn’t be able to give 100% to creating a strategy for them or collaborating on a project.
What advice would you give to someone who has a dream or talent they want to pursue?
Network as much as possible – reach out to family friends, email old classmates, join networking groups to get advice, insight and connections. Be cautious and be smart – research your dream before you take a blind leap of faith.
Do you think fashion empowers women, and if so, how?
Absolutely. I throw on a tailored blazer and a pair of Jimmy Choos and instantly feel like a million dollars. Beautiful clothes can change the way a woman walks, talks, and carries herself.
60 Second Spotlight
What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they’d be surprised to find out?
Hmmm, probably that I’m from Arizona. People always ask me why I moved so far away from home. And I say because New York is the greatest city in the world!
Ten years from now, where would you like to be?
I’d like to be married to my boyfriend Tommy, living in a Tribeca loft with 2 golden retrievers. I’d like to still be running my social media consulting business and writing for various websites.
What’s the one item that's always in your bag?
Mac lipgloss in C-thru – best gloss ever.
Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
Favorite day of the week?
I like all the days of the week now that I don’t have a 9-5 job! But probably Saturday because I get to spend it with Tommy.
Plaid, polka dots or floral prints?
Are you a handbag girl or shoe girl?
If you could meet one person, who would it be?
I would love to meet Oscar de la Renta. He is truly inspiring.
What did you want to be when you grew up (and because we never grow up, what do you want to be when you grow up?)
I wanted to be a news reporter or an actress when I was little. I’m lucky to be able to do what I love now and couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
In an alternate life, what would you do?
I’d have my own cooking show – I love Giada at Home and Barefoot Contessa.
Who are the most important people in your life right now?
My wonderful boyfriend of 6 years, Tommy. He’s my best friend, biggest fan and blog photographer. My sister Kameryn who is going to be my intern this summer. We’ve been fantasizing about working together since we were little so I’m really excited. And my parents who have been so supportive of me in every aspect of my life.
