Janelle Monáe may not have won a Grammy award yet, but with five nominations to date, it's only a matter of time. Her concept R&B albums break the traditional mold of the genre and her thousands of adorning fans prove that what was once traditional R&B is now way old school - and not necessarily "cool."
Even more than her new take on R&B, Janelle makes it a point to call out to the female musicians who have made her rise to fame possible, never forgetting the trek that women have endured in order to not only become muscians in their own right, but to even break molds and find new ways to express creativity within particular genres. She knows that nothing is as simple as it seems and that for every personal success, there was a movement that allowed it. Maybe that's why she is so keen on the men's wear look.
But no matter her reasoning, her style speaks volumes for her industry, women's rights and ultimately herself.
