1. What packing tips do you live by?
I always bring an extra tote or carryon to stash purchases and souvenirs. It’s important that I have a sense of what the weather will be like too. Recently, I went to Scotland and while I assumed it would be warm July weather, I was sadly mistaken. It was 50 degrees and rainy every day! The culture within your destination is key as well. When I studied in the South of France it was inappropriate to show your legs so everyone wore tights under skirts and shorts. Essentially, do your research before jet-setting!
2. In a new city, do you scope out the shops you want to hit or do you prefer stumbling upon great spots?
I can’t stand when people go to a new city and insist upon shopping at typical chain stores. When I am traveling, I try to find original pieces that make a great story. I tend to utilize google a bit when searching for vintage boutiques but also enjoy stumbling upon unique shops. I love when someone asks me where I purchased something and I can say, “Oh I got this in Prague!”
3. What are some of your most memorable shopping finds?
My vintage items. There is a vintage store in Champaign, IL where I found a 1950's mint-colored beaded backless dress that I love! I like how vintage allows me to score beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces for an affordable price.
4. What do you wear when you travel?
My traveling uniform is black ballet flats, leggings, an oversized men's white button-down shirt and Ray-Ban sunglasses. Depending on where I'm headed, my black Burberry trench might accompany me as well. It’s comfortable, classic, and easy to curl up with on the plane.
5. What are your carry on essentials?
Too many things! Here are the most important: my laptop (with downloaded movies), headphones, a book, my iPhone (with TV shows downloaded for when my laptop dies), a few magazines, my notebook (for when I have a brilliant idea), business cards (for when I meet someone on a plane), and finally, for comfort’s sake, a scarf or sweater that I can use as a pillow.
6. Any airport security secrets?
Don't wear jewelry. Don't wear a belt. Wear flats, sandals or easy-to-slip-on boots. Don't have anything in your pockets. And finally, don't wear too many layers!
