Like any bold pattern, the over-sized, checkerboard print is risky territory. In addition to the dangers of appearing too kitsch, this, like any large print, runs the risk of making its wearer look wide, boxy, and just generally awkward. Nonetheless, the svelte Kirsten Stewart was up to the challenge, sporting the look in the form of a romper at a recent formal event. Stewart took further risks, opting for an outfit with extra volume at the shoulders, and difficult to wear front-pockets on the shorts. What makes the look work, aside from the star’s killer legs?
Recognizing that the look could be construed as camp, Stewart went in the opposite direction, selecting make-up and accessories that were ultra-sexy. A pair of buckled, platform sandals, messy, just-rolled out of bed waves, and a smoky cat-eye are anything but ironic. Stewart also wisely chose to stick with a neutral palette, keeping everything from her nail polish to her jewelry in shades of black, white and silver. It was a risky move, requiring some serious strategy, but we’re declaring Stewart’s look to be a checkmate.

Trick Up Your Sleeve
The long sleeves on Stewart’s romper aided the star as she transitioned the typically kitsch, casual look from day to night. Similarly, a blousey top keeps this one-piece in strictly grown up territory.

Don't Be Short With Me
Coveting K. Stew’s front-pocket style, but wary of adding bulk around the upper thigh region? The flat pockets on the front of these leather shorts offer convenience without added volume.

The Bold and The Beautiful
Although replacing Stewart’s check with a sharp vertical stripe, these leggings have the same starkly contrasting, bold, black and white print.

Take a Bow
If it is the playful aspect of Kirsten’s look you’re after, the game board aesthetic is not the only way to achieve this effect. A quirky blouse printed with moustaches, bow ties and top hats does the trick just as well.

Stepping Up
A pair of patent platforms adds an adult flair to Kirsten’s ensemble.
