Nothing says vintage chic quite like nubby tweed—and that is exactly what Karl Lagerfeld delivered in spades for his Fall 2012 Couture collection, aptly titled New Vintage. Just as the house’s founder and namesake masterfully blended masculine menswear with a feminine touch (a strand of pearls, a striking red lip), Lagerfeld counterbalanced masculine styles such as a wide-leg trouser and a slouchy, boxy tweed coat, with feathered, floaty sheers that veered toward prima ballerina and even fairy princess.
While tweedy textures might not be boyfriend-pleasers (even if you’re eschewing the awkwardly voluminous looks Mr. Lagerfeld sent down the runway), they will certainly provoke a few double takes from the fashionably minded. Insert a little Gatsby gloss to evoke the glamour of a bygone era with a sparkly flapper-inspired headband. Leather opera gloves, “take me serious” black knee boots (consider a pair in croc), broach-inspired filigree earrings, a bold gold cocktail ring and an embellished top handle bag complete the look for fall.
